Creation of the Universe in the Quran

Lesson Objective:

- To know Allah is Al-Fatir, Originator of the Universe
- To explore the creation of the universe through Quranic descriptions and verses

Quran Verse:
Do the unbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were joined together and We unravelled them, and We made every living thing out of water? Will they not then have faith? Surah Anbiya 21:30

Key Learning:

There are many descriptions in the Holy Quran about the creation of the universe that are in agreement with modern scientific discoveries but the Big Bang theory does not explain where the original matter came from or who or what caused it. Allah tells us in the Quran that it is He who is Al Fatir, the Originator of all creation.

Lesson Introduction:
Discoveries in astronomy and physics have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that our universe did in fact have a beginning. According to the Big Bang theory, all of the matter in the universe was compacted into a small dense singularity which then expanded over time. The gas moved away from the centre of the universe much like debris from an explosion. As the gas expanded it cooled, allowing structures like stars, galaxies, and planets to form.

Science tells us that even now the stars continue to move away from each other and the universe is continuously expanding. The lands of earth once formed a single land mass called Pangea that broke up and drifted apart into the continents we know today, and these continents are still moving.

Activity: Quranic Verses about the Creation of the Universe
Look up the following verses and match the descriptions from the Quran to the scientific discoveries of the creation of the universe. Put your findings into a Venn Diagram.
  • 21:30, 41:11, 51:47, 79:30, 42:11
Expansion from singular point
Oxygen is created by nuclear reactions in stars. If you put hydrogen and oxygen together in the cold of space, you get H2O. There are enormous amounts of water in space.
Planets created from hot gas
Universe continuously expanding
Continents moving apart
Allah is Al Fatir, He is the originator of the heavens and the Earth.

Muslims regard the existence of the universe as proof of the existence of Allah. The creation of the universe cannot be simply a matter of chance.

Where did the original gas matter for the explosion to happen originate from?
Who caused the bang to occur?
Who caused the organisation of the explosion into such a perfect structure?
How can all this happen from nothing?

Islam is very clear about the belief that Allah was responsible for the creation of the universe.
