ي Is for Yunus (a)

Allah sent Prophet Yunus to tell the people of Ninevah to believe in Him and to be good Muslims. Prophet Yunus tried very hard but the people would laugh at him and just not listen. Prophet Yunus got tired and decided to leave the town. He boarded a boat but when it became too heavy, the people on board threw Prophet Yunus out into the sea. Allah sent a big fish which swallowed Prophet Yunus. He found himself in the darkness of the fish’s tummy where he prayed to Allah and said sorry for leaving the job he was sent to do.

ى Is for Yawm, Day

Allah tells us in the Quran that there will be a day after we have died when will all be gathered together. We will be asked what we did with the blessings Allah gave us and will be rewarded for all the good we have done. 

Tomorrow is Yawm Ul Eid, the Day of Eid! Make dua to Allah to accept all your good deeds of this blessed month as you say farewell to the Holy month of Ramadhan.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Waw

و Is for Wudhu

Allah tells us in the Quran that He loves those who are clean. Wudhu is a special type of washing Allah teaches us about. We make wudhu before every salaa. 

Song: Replace the lyrics and mime the actions for the song, ‘This is the way we wash our hands’ going through the parts of the body we wash when we do wudhu.

و Is for Waraqah, Leaf

Allah tells us in the Quran that there is not a leaf that falls that He doesn’t know about. Can you imagine, Allah knows everything!

Quranic Alphabet Series: Haa

ه Is for Hijra

Prophet Muhammad (S) was born in Makkah but he later moved to the city of Madina. The Islamic Calendar starts at the time of this hijra, this movement. The Islamic year is 1442. Allah tells us in the Quran there are 12 months in the lunar calendar and each month is around 29 days.

ه Is for Hud Hud, Hoopee

The hoopoe bird is a distinctive bird with zebra striped wings and a crest of orange feathers on its head. Allah speaks of the Hoopee bird in the Quran. Prophet Sulayman (a) had been given the power by Allah to speak to and understand animals. One day the hoopee bird went missing. When he returned, the bird told Prophet Sulayman (a) about the Queen of Sheba and her people and how they prayed to the sun and not to Allah. Prophet Sulayman (a) sent a letter to the Queen telling her all about Allah and how its only to Allah we pray to. 

Craft: Make a finger puppet and decorate it to resemble a Hoopee bird. Use it to retell the story

Quranic Alphabet Series: Noon

ن Is for Nahl, Bee

There is a whole surah in the Quran called The Bee. Allah tells us that honey is made in a variety of colours and it is like medicine, making you better when you are ill. When you see bees buzzing around flowers, they are searching for nectar, a sweet liquid that the flower makes. Allah tells us in the Quran that He is the one who taught the bees where to build their homes called hives and how to collect nectar from plants and turn it into sweet honey. It takes about 12 bees their entire lives to make one single teaspoon of honey!

Game: Bee Still! Have the kids run around but they must freeze still when the buzzing bee comes near them!

Activity: Be like a bee! Have children transfer skittle sweets into a cup by using suction power of their ‘tongue’ straw. Have them empty their cups by running back to the ‘hive’ jar after each collection until the timer rings. It’s hard work!

ن Is for Nawm, Sleep

Every living thing sleeps. Sleep allows us to rest our body, muscles and mind. Without enough sleep you can forget what you’ve learned, be grumpy, have trouble listening and can become ill. Sleep is a blessing from Allah. 

Activity: Sweet Dream Spray

Recite Ayatul Kursi and 4 Quls over some water in a spray bottle. Spray it around the room before going to bed while asking Allah to keep you safe at night.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Meem

م Is for Muhammad
Allah sent the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (S). Allah tells us in the Quran that Prophet Muhammad (S) had the most excellent manners and that he is an example and role model of who to copy and be like. Good manners help everyone get along together.
Allah also tells us in the Quran that Rasulallah is so special that Allah and the angels send blessings on Prophet Muhammad (S). Allah asks us to do the same by reciting salawat. Reciting salawat every time we hear or read the Prophet's name shows our love for him.
Activity: Use your hands every morning or at salaa time to count and recite 5 loud salawaat!

م Is for Ma’an, Water

Allah tells us in the Qur’an that He has made everything from water. Our body needs water to survive. Allah sends down water from the sky. The rain helps the plants to grow and gives us and the animals food to eat. So should you complain when it rains?! Rain is a great blessing from Allah.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Laam

ل Is for Laillaha illala, There is no God but Allah
All Muslims believe in the Kalima. They say, La ilaha ilallah, there is no God except Allah. No one is more powerful and important than Allah. He is the one we worship and obey.
Activity: Did you know the dhikr Laillaha illalah is like a secret dhikr because it can be recited with your tongue but without anyone able to see your lips moving! Try it in the mirror.

ل Is for Lisaan, Tongue
Hold your tongue and try to talk - you won’t be able to! Allah has designed the tongue with 8 muscles that help it move in ways that allow it to make different sounds of speech! We must be careful to use our tongue to speak good words. The tongue also helps us to taste different flavours. Can you imagine if everything tasted the same?!
Game: Select a few different foods and have the child guess what they are while blindfolded.

ل Is for Layl, Night
Allah tells us in the Quran that He made the night for us to rest, but there are some animals like bats and owls that He made nocturnal. That means they are more active at night.
Activity: Draw some nocturnal animals with a white crayon or candle. Paint over it with black paint to see your animals appear!

ك is for Kitab, Book

The Quran, the book of Allah is the most important kitab. Did you know that the first world Allah revealed in the Quran was Iqra, which is the Arabic word meaning Read. How important must reading be for Allah to choose that as the first word He told us! Reading helps to develop your brain, learn about the world around you and is fun too!

Craft: Make and decorate a bookmark. Punch a hole at the top and add a ribbon.

Activity: Make a one page book using a single sheet of paper. Use it to write or draw all about you and your favourite things.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Qaf

ق is for Quran
The Quran is the word of Allah and was brought down by Angel Jibrael to Prophet Muhammad (S) on Laylatul Qadr, the best night in the holy month of Ramadhan. The Quran contains instructions for us to follow, so we can live in the best way! We must always try to read, memorise, understand and follow the teachings of the Quran. When we recite Quran, it brings lots of blessing into our home and makes our house shine brightly for the angels to see in the heavens.

ق is for Qamar, Moon
Allah tells us in the Quran that the changing moon phases are a way of measuring time. Sighting of the new moon marks the beginning of a new month. Did you know that the moon is four times smaller than Earth and made of rocks? If you went to the moon, you would float!

ق is for Qibla
Muslims from all over the world pray facing the same direction, towards the Ka'ba in Makkah. It is called the Qibla.

Use a map/globe to point out the locations of Makkah. Decorate an arrow with a picture of the Ka’ba and stick it in the bedroom.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Faa

ف is for Fatiha, The Opening
There are 114 surahs in the Quran and Surah Fatiha is the first one, The Opening! We recite Surah Fatiha in every salaa. In this Surah we praise and thank Allah and are reminded how especially Kind Allah is. The Surah even has a dua, asking Allah for help to live in the right way and to keep us away from a life which is not good.
Activity: We can send a special gift to the people we love and have died and returned back to Allah by reciting Surah Fatiha, especially on a Thursday night.

ف is for Feel, Elephants 
Elephants are the largest and strongest land animals. In Surah Feel, Allah tells us about the story of the elephants and how the army of Abraha tried to destroy the Ka’ba. We learn that birds and tiny stones killed the massive elephants. It shows us that Allah has power over everything.
Storytime: He will look after it by QFatima
Game: Wear a long sock on your arm and pretend it’s an elephants trunk! Play against the clock to see how many marbles you can transfer between containers using your trunk compared to using your hands.
Craft: Draw the outline of a front facing elephant. Punch through a party blower for the nose and trumpet away!

Quranic Alphabet Series: Ghayn

غ Is for Ghar, Cave

Prophet Muhammad (S) used to spend a lot of time in the mountainous cave of Hira in Makkah, thinking and praying. He was 40 years old when Angel Jibrail brought to him The Holy Qur'an, the Book sent by Allah.

Craft: Create your own cave scene. Use a brown paper bag or an inverted cup to create a cave. Attach a tea light inside to represent the angel and surround with small pebbles.

Activity: Create your own Iqra cave by setting up a tent or creating a cosy reading nook. 

غ Is for Ghuraab, Crow

Crows are among the smartest animals in the world and the most clever of all birds! It has been discovered that when crows come across nuts that are too hard for them to crack, they drop the nuts while still in the sky onto a hard road to help them open up. But with so many cars on the road, they could get run over, so they wait by the traffic lights to cross when the lights turned red and eat the nut safely! How extremely clever!

ع Is for ‘Ankaboot, Spider

Allah talks about the spider's web in Surah Ankaboot. A spider once built a web over the cave that Prophet Muhammad (S) was hiding in. The web helped to keep the Holy Prophet safe because it stopped people searching inside. Spiders spin webs using a sticky material from their body called silk. The web traps insects for the spider to eat.

Activity: Web Weaving

Punch holes around the rim of a paper plate and weave wool or string across it to create your own web design. 

Craft: Spider Stamp

Make eight cuts half way up a tissue roll and fold the ends out to form a spider’s legs. Dip into black paint to make your own spider stamps.

ع Is for ‘Ayn, Eyes

What a blessing to be able to see the wonderful world around us! People who can not see are called blind. They use a special method called Braille to touch raised dot patterns that help them read.

Game: Play I spy with my little Ayn or place some objects in a bag and have the child guess them blindly by placing their hand inside.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Dhaa

ظ is for Dhil, Shadow

Shadows are made when an object does not allow the light to pass through it. Allah talks about shadows in the Quran and how they are related to the sun. The position of a shadow changes according to the position of the sun. Before the invention of clocks, shadows were used as a way to find out the times of prayer using a sundial. Shadows also provide shade in hot weathers. 

Activity: Make a simple sundial and watch how the shadow moves around the clock!

Quranic Alphabet Series: Taa

is for Ta'am, Food
You might wish you could eat crisps, chocolates and sweets all the time, but are they good for you? Allah tells us in the Quran that we must eat food which is good for us and also be careful not to waste it. Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins to keep us healthy. It’s important we try to eat a whole range of varying colours each day. Did you know that it takes at least 10-12 times to try a food before you can really know if don’t like something?

Allah tells us in the Quran that it is He who holds up in the air every single bird in the sky! Allah is in control of and has power over everything. Allah is amazing even the birds sing the praise of Allah!
Game: Blow up a balloon and see how long you can keep it up in the air!

Quranic Alphabet Series: Daad

 

ض for Dhuha, The Morning Light
The early morning is a special time when most people are asleep. A few wake up to remember Allah and pray to Him. The time for Fajr, the first salaa of the day, is just before the first light appears at dawn. Allah tells us in the Quran that He removes the darkness of the night for the light to appear. What if He didn’t do that and left us in the dark?! If you’ve ever seen a sunrise, you’ll notice the colours; orange, yellow, red and maybe even purple! Allah is the most beautiful artist!
Activity : Sunrise Silhouette Painting
Learn how to mix colours and use this to paint stripes of red, orange and yellow across a sheet of paper. When dry, cut an outline shape of a bird, house or other object from black card to stick over it.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Saad

ص Is for Salaa, Prayer
Salaa is one of the most important ways of worshipping Allah. Allah tells us in the Quran that we must remember Him by praying salaa at five specific times in the day. Adhaan is a special call to prayer. It reminds us that praying salaa brings us success. A man named Bilal was the first person to give the adhan. He was the Holy Prophet’s favourite Muezzin!

ش Is for Shukr, Thankfulness
Allah reminds us in the Quran that He has given us so much that however hard we try, we will never be able to count our blessings. Allah teaches us to be grateful and then promises us that when we are thankful, He will give us even more!

Trees are so important. They give us oxygen to help us breath and keep the air clean by absorbing pollution. Trees provide homes and shelter for animals, shade us from the sun, give us fruits and can be used for wood and making paper! SubhanAllah every part of the tree serves the creation of Allah, in lots of different ways.
Activity: How many blessings from what Allah has given have you shared today? Even sharing a smile counts!
Craft: Family Handprint Tree
Lay your arm flat on a paper and draw around it as the trunk of tree. Add handprints from everyone in your family to form the tree. Display the picture and let it remind you to be thankful to Allah for your family.

The Qur’an teaches us that when we meet each other, we must say "As-Salam Alaikum”. We are asking Allah to bring the other person peace and showing them that they are safe with you.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Zaa

Is for Zaytoon
Olives are a special fruit mentioned in the Quran which tells us it comes from a blessed tree. Olive trees are some of the oldest in the world and most survive for more than 1000 years! We have been recommended to not only eat olives but also to use its oil on our hair and skin. Do you know which other fruits are mentioned in the Quran?

Is for Zakat
Zakat is a special charity payment we give in the way of Allah to those in need. Zakat ul Fitr is wajib to be made after the moon of Eid is sighted. It teaches us, especially on days of celebration, to always first remember the poor. There is joy in sharing what we have and it is a way of thanking Allah for giving us so much, allowing other people to enjoy Eid too.
Activity: Decorate an envelope and keep it aside for your parents to use for the Zakat Ul Fitr payment.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Raa

ر Is for Rahman and Rahim
Allah begins every Surah, except one, using His names Ar Rahman and Ar Rahim, the one who is extremely kind and caring. Allah is the Most Kind. He loves you and cares for you with a level of kindness we can never imagine or understand. Allah's kindness is showered upon every single thing He has created. Allah is kind to us even if we have done something wrong. Allah’s love for us is 70x greater than a mother’s love for her child.

ر Is for Ramadhan
Ramadhan is so special it is the only month mentioned by name in the Quran. It is the month in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (S). It is a special time to remember Allah, make dua and do extra good deeds! Ramadhan is also the month of fasting when we do not eat food or drink water from sunrise in the morning until sunset in the evening. For iftar we open our fast with dates like Prophet Muhammad (saw) used to. They are sweet and give us energy quickly.

Quranic Alphabet Series: Dhal

ذ Is for Dhikr, Remembering Allah
Words that help us remember Allah are called Dhikr. Phrases like saying Bismillah when you start something, Alhamdulilah when you’re feeling thankful and SubhanAllah when you’re amazed by the wonders of Allah! The tasbih we recite after salaa is a special gift from Allah to the Holy Prophet to his daughter, Lady Fatima (as) who then shared the gift with us!

Craft: Make your own Tasbeeh threading beads onto pipe cleaner or string. You could even add a tassel by learning to make one by watching an online tutorial.

ذ Is for Dubaab, Fly
Allah tells us in the Quran that nobody besides Him has the power to create anything not even a small fly! We might feel proud, bigger and stronger than the fly, but we don’t have the power to stop it
buzzing around and bothering us. If a fly were to snatch away our food, we don’t even have the power to get it back!
