The Brothers of Prophet Yusuf: Choices and Consequences

Lesson Objective:
- To know that the Quran recounts the best of stories and each hold lessons for us to apply.

- To become familiar with the story of Prophet Yusuf and his brothers through the words of the Quran. 

- To understand that all our choices and actions have consequences.

Quran Verse:

In Yusuf and his brothers there are certainly signs for the seekers. Surah Yusuf 12:7

Lesson Introduction:

Allah has narrated the story of Prophet Yusuf in great detail in the Qur’an in Surah Yusuf, telling us in 12:3 that this is 'ahsanul qasas, the best of stories', with many lessons for us to learn. It is the only story in the Quran which is narrated entirely in one surah. 

The surah begins with a dream that Yusuf as a child narrates to his father Yaqub of 11 stars, the sun and the moon prostrating. His father tells him not to tell it to his brothers who are extremely jealous of him. The elder brothers plot to get rid of him and put him in a well. He is rescued by a caravan and sold as a slave to an Egyptian high-ranking minister.

Read the following verses in your Quran and and go through the discussion points in pairs.

12:4-5:

What is Prophet Yusuf telling his father?

Who do you think the eleven stars, moon and sun represent? 

What were they objects doing? 

What did Prophet Ya'qub tell his son Yusuf and why do you think he said this?

From the conversation, what can you tell about the relationship between Prophet Ya'qub and his son? 

12:8-10

What is the plan the brothers are discussing? 

How do the brothers justify their attitude towards Yusuf?

What do the brothers tell themselves they will do after they have done the evil deed? Is this possible?

What alternative does another brother suggest to the plan?  Is this a better idea? 

What would you suggest if you were one of Yusuf's brothers?

After the brothers show their father the shirt with blood, telling him what had happened, what reason does Prophet Yaq'ub give for them committing such an act? 

What does this tell you about how our soul reacts when we do wrong?

Recap the four choices and think about them in content of the choices made by the brothers of Prophet Yusuf.

1. Impulsive

What does impulsive mean? 

Were the brothers impulsive and how do we know?

Which decisions are we sometimes impulsive with and with what consequences? 

2. Do Nothing

Should Yusuf's brothers have done nothing? Should emotions just be ignored? 

Are there times when it is better to do nothing? Give examples

Sometimes people hesitate to take sides. Is doing nothing always a safe choice? When can it be wrong/harmful to do nothing?

3. Be a Follower

Were all of Yusuf's brothers followers?  Did anyone stand up to disagree? What does this tell us about the brother who speaks up?

How were the brothers able to silence the voice of conscience? 

What is the danger of being a follower? If you don't stand for something, you fall for anything

How can you decide when its right to be a follower? 

Who are our ultimate role models to follow and not follow?

“focus on being someone worth following.” What does that look like?

4. Be Thoughtful: 

What does it mean to be thoughtful? 

What is the consequence we are always thinking about?

Prophets in the Quran

Learning Objective:

- To recap the role of the Prophets

- To be familiar with the named Prophets in the Quran

- To understand the concept of ismah, the infallibility of the anbiya.

Quran Verse:

Our Lord is He who gave everything its form and then guided it. Surah Taha 20:49-50

Allah has built within us a fitrah, a natural instinct to believe in God. However, this natural instinct is not sufficient for our guidance, and Allah has therefore sent Prophets (anbiya) and Imams (a’immah) to guide us to the right path, teaching us how to use our potential and become our best.

All 124,000 Prophets (Nabi, Pl. Anbiya) were sent with the same message of Tawhid to guide mankind. 21:25. Some of them were sent with a special message or a reveled book and these prophets are called rasul. There are 28 Prophets mentioned by name in the Quran.

Activity: Prophets in the Quran

Have a look through the contents page of the Holy Quran listing the titles of the surahs. Can you find the surah named after the Prophets? Read the following verses of Surat al-Anbiya (21) highlight and list the prophets mentioned. How many did you find?

A Nabi must have the following qualifications:

1. Must be sent by Allah.

2. Must possess ismah which means to be sinless and never disobey Allah. A person who has ismah and is infallible is called a ma'sum. 

3. Must be able to perform miracles.

It is important to understand that the ma‘sumin are not forced by Allah or unable to commit sins. They keep away from sin by their own free will. A ma‘sum keeps away from sin because of his or her deep understanding of how sin harms the soul of a person and also because he is aware and conscious of Allah’s presence at all times. This is just like ordinary people who have the free will to hurt their bodies but they don’t do it because they know how painful and harmful it will be. People commit sins because they don’t realise how much they are harming their souls. If they knew that, they would not even think of committing a sin.

Activity: Discussion about infallibility

- Why is it important for messengers to be infallible? Find and read Surah Najm 53: 3-4. What does Allah tell us about the Holy Prophet (S) and why do you think He said this?

- Does being a Ma'sum guarantee that your family will be safe too? What does Allah tell Prophet Nuh when he asks for his son to be saved? 11:45-46

- Are there any stories that made you think the Prophets had committed a sin? (P.Adam/P/Yunus)

Such ‘mistakes’ made by the anbiya are not actually sins that affect their position as spiritual guides. Instead, such actions are called Tark al-Awla which means ‘leaving the better option’. It is possible for the Prophets to sometimes make a choice that is not the best even though it is not a sin. 

- The fourteen ma‘sumin are Allah’s most perfect creation and do not commit even tark al-awla. Read Surah Ahzab 33:33 what does Allah say about them in the Quran?

Prophet Adam (as)

Learning Objective:
- To know that it is Allah who gives life.
- To know that Prophet Adam (as) was the first man created by Allah
- To understand that we have been created to be representatives of Allah on Earth

Qur'an verse: 
laqad khalaqnal insaana fi ahsani taqweem
Indeed We have created the human being in the best of form 95:4

Prophet Adam (as) was the first human being created by Allah. Allah asked the angels to bring different types of clay from the earth. The clay was then mixed with water and left for a while. He then shaped it into the form of a man and left it to set. When it was strong He made the man come alive and it was Prophet Adam (as). As soon as he was alive, Prophet Adam (pbuh) sneezed and said: Alhamdulilah!

Allah told the Angels that he has created insaan, the human being, to be a khalifa, a representative of Allah on the Earth. What is a representative? What is their role? When you go on school trip, the teachers tell you to behave well as you are representing the school. Your uniform helps others to know where you are from and your behaviour tells them what your school is like. 

How do we represent Allah? We behave with the manners of His Asmaul Husna. 

We know Allah is Rahman and Rahim, so we too must be kind to everyone. We know He is Jawaad, generous, so we too much make sure we share whatever we have with others. We know Allah is As-Salaam, the one who gives peace and we too should make sure we act peacefully with everyone around us. We must let our manners shine so that people can see what an amazing God we have! 

Activity: Allah is Al Muhyi, The Giver Of Life 

Give each child some playdoh to make a model of themselves. Allah tells us in the Qur'an that He created insaan, human beings, from clay. What's the difference between our clay model and the one Allah made? Can you make it come alive? Allah moulded the body perfectly from clay and made it come alive. Allah is Al Muhyi, only He can give life

Activity: I Am God's Representative

Have each child pick one out and describe ways in which they could act in accordance to the Ism.

Older children can use the facts to make a poster or present a short talk on what the Qur'an tells us about Prophet Isa (as) using Surah Maryam, chapter 19 to find the relevant verses.

The Messengers Of Allah

Quran Verse: 

Muhammadun Rasulallah
Muhammad (saw) is the Messenger of Allah 48:29

Lesson Introduction:
Allah sent 124,000 Prophets (Nabi) to guide us. Prophets are chosen by Allah and sent to teach us how to follow Allah and behave in a way that will help us become the best we can. 
Allah gave some of the Prophets extra instructions to deliver to the people. These Prophets are called Messengers (Rasool). Prophet Musa (as), Isa (as) and Muhammad (saw) are 3 important Messengers. The instructions they brought were written into special holy books.


Key Learning Point:
Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in Allah, but follow different holy books.
Prophet Muhammad (saw) is the last Prophet sent by Allah. He brought the final message of the Qur'an. The book contains the complete set of instructions, and all the steps needed, to live in the right way and become our best.

Activity: Role Play Messengers

Select 3 children to be the main Prophets to whom a book was revealed and have the others gather into a group. 

Have the child acting Musa (as) say to the group 'Aminubillah', believe in Allah. 

Ask the children if they'd like to follow Prophet Musa (as), then to line up behind him. 
Explain how this group of people believed in Allah and took Prophet Musa to be the final Prophet. They followed him and the instructions he had brought upto that point, in the book called Torah. These people are called Jews. 

Explain how God's message was not yet complete and Allah sent more Prophets after Musa (as)

Have the next child acting Isa (as) call out to the remaining group,'Aminubillah', believe in Allah.
Ask the children if they'd like to follow Prophet Isa (as), to line up behind him. 

Explain how this group of people believed in Allah and took Prophet Isa to be the final Prophet. They followed him and the instructions he had brought upto that point, in the book called Injeel/Bible. These people are called Christians.

But God's message was still not complete. Prophet Isa (as) actually told the people, "A messenger will come after me, named Ahmad." 61:6
Allah kept on sending more Prophets until about 600 years later, Allah sent Prophet Muhammad (saw) as the final Prophet and the last Messenger.

Have the next child acting Muhammad (saw) to call out to the remaining group, 'Aminubillah'.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) told the people that he was 'khaatam nabiyeen' 33:60, the last Prophet. 
A group of people who had believed in all the prophets upto then, now accepted that Prophet Muhammad (saw) was sent by Allah as the final Messenger. They followed him and the complete set of instructions in the final book called the Qur'an (5:3). These people are called Muslims.

Prophet Musa (as)

Key Learning Points:

- There are many examples from the story of Prophet Musa (as) that show us how Allah is the best Protector.

- Allah has power over everything, so He can do anything to protect you from everything!

Lesson Introduction:

Allah tells us about some of the Prophets in the Qur’an. He explains to us that there are lessons to learn when we read their stories and they help us to become stronger in our belief about Allah

Prophet Musa was one of the five great prophets of Allah. He was given a special book of rules called the Tawrat. One of the things we learn from the story of Prophet Moses is that Allah is the best Protector.

Allah protected Prophet Musa (as) by:
- Saving him from being killed by Firawn. 
- Saving him from drowning in the river 
- Having a good women like Bibi Asiya find the basket and keep him.
- Having him grow up safely in Firawn's own palace! 
- Allah even made the sea split in two so that Prophet Musa (as) could cross safely and escape from Firawn and his soldiers who were chasing him. 
'Allah has power over everything'. So He can do anything, to protect us from everything! 

Activity: Role Play Prophet Musa (as) meets Firawn
Allah asked Prophet Musa (as) to go to Firawn and tell him about Allah.
God also does many powerful things for us every day. He brings the sun up in the morning, he showers the earth with rain, and makes the trees grow. He is the Creator of everything.

Have the children act out what they would say to the Pharoah, to make him believe that Allah is more powerful, the only one God.

Activity: Parting the Red sea
In a bowl of water, sprinkle some black pepper and have children blow it as hard as they can to split it into two.  Discuss with them - was it easy?  Could they do it? Do they think its possible?!

As you talk through the event, explain how Allah's protection is so great that He even made the sea split in two so that Prophet Musa (as) could cross safely and escape from Firawn and his soldiers who were chasing him.

Have the children either chant together, 'Ya Hafidh', or recite the Quran verse,'Allahu khairon hafidhan', Allah is the best Protector.

Place the tip of a wooden spoon which has been dipped in washing liquid, into the centre of the bowl. Watch how the pepper spreads away and the water splits in two!

Allah is the best protector. He is always there to help you. He has the power to keep you safe even if it means parting the sea! Nothing is impossible for Allah. 

Follow up with the lesson on Surah Naas to explain how we can have Allah's protection at all times.

Activity: Retelling the story 
Use the activity sheet as a prop for the kids to to talk through the splitting of the Red Sea by using the actual Qur'an verse 26:63 which explains the event.

1. With the flaps folded down, use the finger or a pencil to to strike the sea 
2. Open up to reveal dry ground and the two sides folding over as solid mountains. 
3. use the two fingers to walk Prophet Musa (as) and his followers safely across to the other side 
4. Close the flaps firmly to drown Firawn as he tries to chase Prophet Musa!

5. Boldly declare the Quran verse for the lesson,'Allahu khairon hafidhan', Allah is the best Protector

Activity: Review Game
A race to cross the sea and get from one side of the room to the other by answering a series of true/false questions. 
All raise hands if believe true and step forward if correct. Everyone who guesses wrong takes one step backwards.

Key Learning Point:

The story of Prophet Yusuf (as) teaches us how we should always listen to Allah, never give up and say sorry when we have made a mistake or done something wrong.

Saying sorry does not mean just saying the words. We must remember Allah and feel sad for what we have done. We must try our best not to do it again and then go back to doing what makes Allah happy.

Allah is Al Ghaffor, the Most Forgiving. He rubs out the wrong actions from the book of deeds that the angels have been writing in. He gives us a second chance.

When people do wrong to us, we must forgive them instead of getting angry and upset.

Game: 
1. Place a toy figure such as a lego man, weighed down with blue-tak into a painted recycled milk carton filled with water. Have the children look inside to see how dark and difficult it is to spot the little man inside.
2. Have the children recite a continuous tasbeeh of 'astaghfirullah' 
3. While reciting, take it in turns to pour the water from the whale into a glass each. 

4. The winner of the game is the one who is pouring when the man flows out with the water! (Since the figure has been weighed down, it should take a few turns before the man falls out.)

5. Allah has listened to the dua of Prophet Yusuf (as) and saved him from the belly of the whale!

Talk about:

- How it must have been for Prophet Yunus (as) to be inside the belly of the whale. 
- Try to imagine how sad he must've felt as he realised that he had done wrong. 
- How he spent many days and nights, praying and saying sorry to Allah. 
- Can also point out how it took more than just one 'sorry'. Many of the a'maal we do, teach us to recite Astaghfirulla 70 times!

The Story of Prophet Yunus (as)

Lesson Objective: To retell the story of Prophet Yunus (as)

Activity:
- March to Nineva
- Tell the people 'Aminubillah, believe in Allah'.
- After numerous attempts, become disheartened and slowly walk to the sea
- Get onto a boat, pair up and row along to the rhyme- Imagine being inside the whale and curl up into a dark space- Realise it was wrong to give up on the people and became sad 
- Pray to Allah 'Astaghfirullah', we are so sorry. 
- As the whale throws you onto the beach, roll on the ground.
- Say thank you as you eat fruits from trees that Allah had made grow especially

It took Prophet Nuh (as) 80 years to build the ark! Even though people laughed at him and called him mad, Prophet Nuh listened to and did what Allah had asked him. It was the ark that kept those who believed in Allah safe, when the flood came.

Prophet Nuh Story Telling Aid

Lesson Objective:

- to visually demonstrate how only those that believed in Allah and got onto the ark of Prophet Nuh (as), were safe. All the other people drowned.

Fill a container with water and use pennies to represent people. Place a smaller floating container

‘ark’ inside, and show how the pennies ‘drown’ to the bottom except those that are in the ‘ark’.
