What's Happening in Iran?

On Saturday 28th Feb ‘26, America and Israel started a war against Iran. They have bombed a primary school, many hospitals and civilian buildings. They also assassinated (targeted and killed) Ayatullah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran.

Why is Ayatullah Khamenei important?

He was the most important leader in Iran. Iran’s system of government is called a theocracy, which means the laws of the country are based on religion. In Iran, the laws are based on Shia Islamic beliefs.

Just as the Prophet Muhammad (saww) was a religious leader, a spiritual guide, a military commander and political figure, The Supreme Leader of Iran follows this example, and is also given all these important roles!

Peaceful Protest

 Quran Verse:
Wa ya'muroona bil ma'roofi wa yanhawna 'anil munkar

Encourage what is right and forbid what is wrong 3:104

Activity: Protest March

A protest march is a peaceful way to make your voice heard and seen for causes that you stand for. It is important to take part as the Quran teaches us that we must encourage what is good and forbid what is wrong.

Activity: Make a Protest Poster

Holding a sign during a protest march is a free tool that helps your voice be heard. Make a sign to say what you care about and put a positive message out into the world! Choose a slogan that delivers your message well. Remember it has to be a short, bold sentence to fit onto your card. Design your poster in an eye catching manner.

If you go to a protest march about Palestine, you will often here the chant 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.' Its a statement that demands that Palestinians are given rights and freedom wherever they live within the land covering the whole area between the river Jordan on one side to the Mediterranean Sea on the other.

Activity: Boycott

To boycott means to stop buying or using the goods or services of a certain company or country as a protest. Learn about some of the brands you should stop spending your money on as these companies actively fund what is wrong and go against Islamic values.

Qur'an Verse: u’diluw , Be Just And Act Fairly (5:8)

Oppression is when someone uses their power or authority to treat others in a way that is unfair. This could be denying them their rights, freedoms, and dignity. Islam teaches us to stand up against injustice when you see it.

The Holy Prophet (S) has said "Whoever among you sees evil, let him change it with his hand. If he cannot do so, then with his tongue. If he cannot do so, then with his heart."

Activity: Palestine Map Collage

1. Use the images to introduce and talk about Palestinian culture and the history of the land
2. Cut, stick and collage the images over the card printed map of Palestine 

3. Cut out the map following the outline on reverse.
3. Paste the map onto coloured card or painted canvas. 

4. Display prominently and use as a visual reminder to always keep the Palestinian people in our prayers and to do whatever we can to always stand up for injustice.

Activity: Pictorial Quran Surah Tabs

To index the surahs in the Quran for easy reference and to aid learning of the surah names and numbers using visual images that illustrate the chapter titles.

@Ahlulbayt.art.by.alisa has created beautifully illustrated Quran tabs and offers them as a free PDF download which can be sized to your preference. 

By printing the document at 4 per page directly onto A4 sticker paper/labels, will allow you to easily cut and stick each image directly onto the end of small coloured sticky flag tabs.

Larger size images can be printed onto white card to hold its weight and glue in accordingly. 

Note: If your Quran opens to the right like the one translated by M H Shakir, then you will need to reverse your tab printing settings to right-left

From Karbala to my Salaa

Imam Husayn (as) lived by all the beliefs and values salaa teaches. His connection with Allah through salaa was so strong that it gave him strength to stand for what is right and made him the incredible personality that he is.

Learning Objective:

A hands on learning tool to use daily through the month of Ramadhan or even weekly through the year!

Activity: Ramadhan Board

Choose to select different categories depending on the age of the child. Print and cut out the cards to be placed into each envelope. Pick from the envelopes each day to learn about Allah and the Quran, build a habit of talking to God through conversation starters, remember to thank Him with gratitude prompts and include others in your duas with names of the family and countries of the world.

Eid Adha Game

Make a pass the parcel game for Eid Adha using the Prophet Ibrahim Quranic Facts worksheet. Rewrite the facts as questions to help children recall their learnings. Tape each question under each layer of wrapping, using an Eid nasheed or the Story of Ibrahim song while the parcel is being passed around the circle. If short on preparation time/to save paper, the questions can be put into a pot to be picked at each turn instead of unwrapping the present each time.

Prophet Ibrahim (a) in the Quran

Activity: 10 Quranic Facts about Prophet Ibrahim (a)
Read through the facts and match them up with the correct picture.

1. Instead of worshiping the stars, moon and sun, Prophet Ibrahim told the people to worship Allah, the creator of them all. 6:76-79
2. The king Nimrod claimed that he was God and ordered a large catapult to be built and Prophet Ibrahim to be thrown into a fire but Allah made the fire cool and safe 21:51-70
3. Prophet Ibrahim’s character is highly praised in the Quran 16:120-122
4. Prophet Ibrahim was always grateful for his blessings 16:121
5. Prophet Ibrahim was told by Allah to leave his wife Hajra and baby Ismail in the desert in Makkah 14:37
6. Prophet Ibrahim dreamt that he was sacrificing his son but Allah saved Ismail and in his place there was a sheep. 37:102-113
7. Allah asked Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail to build the Holy Ka’ba
8. Surah 14 of the Holy Quran is named after Prophet Ibrahim (a)
9. Prophet Ibrahim prayed to Allah to send a good leader for his people. Allah answered his dua and sent Prophet Muhammad (a) 2:129
10. Prophet Ibrahim is known as Khalilulah, the friend of Allah 4:125

Hajj Kaba Calendar

Learning Objective:
- to be immersed in learning about the Hajj over the ten days.
- to gain an overview of the Hajj rituals and learn how we can apply them.
- to help visually understand that Eid Al Adha marks the end of Hajj.

Activity: Hajj Kaba Calendar
Make an interactive calendar for Dhulhijja using the calendar inserts which have been produced to be used together with the Hajj Activities EBook. The calendar can also be used as a standalone for younger children.

1. Print the Hajj calendar inserts. Colour in the images and place the inserts either into small envelopes or fold each one in half and number accordingly. The activity numbers at the bottom of each insert correspond to the page numbers in the Hajj Activities EBook.

2. Arrange the envelopes or folded inserts 3x3 onto a horizontal A4 piece of black card which can then be trimmed. You can also paint a black cardboard square. Leave room at the top of the square to decorate with a strip of gold card, paint or tape. Glue down the backs of each folded insert.

3. Press down and close the inserts firmly or secure with a little blue tac. Open each day to discuss accordingly.

Equality and Discrimination

Let not one community make fun of another community Surah Hujurat 49:11

The Quran teaches us that we are all children of the same parents, Adam and Hawwa and created from the same earth. Allah has created humans into many nations, communities, races and colours. But one nation or race can not claim they are better than others. As human beings we are the same and it is only our faith and actions that make us better or worse before Allah. 

Yet within society, people don’t always get along, and sometimes we forget that it is other people’s differences that make them unique and special. We often look down on people as we believe that they are lesser than us in some way. Allah tells us in the Qur’an, u’diluw, be just and always act fairly. Allah teaches us that every member of society is equal and deserves the same rights, treatment and respect from others. 

The opposite of equality is discrimination. Discrimination is when someone is treated differently or unfairly based on a variety of things such as their beliefs, their skin colour, or even whether they are a boy or girl. This is completely wrong.

In Surah Hujurat, Allah warns those who discriminate against and make fun of others. Some people think that they are better than others because they are fairer in skin colour or because of where they were born. They use these false beliefs to cause anger and hatred between communities. History is full of examples of one group of people depriving another of its basic human rights.
